Tomorrow, September 24th, the deadline for the nominations for candidates to lead the World Health Organization will close. So far there have been four candidates only.

In today's edition, we bring you a brief story on China reportedly weighing a nomination to enter this race. So far, there has been no official confirmation or denial to our queries. Below, we present what we have gathered. It is not clear if China will eventually nominate a candidate before the close of the deadline tomorrow. We are following these developments closely.

Is China weighing a nomination to lead the World Health Organization?

China has reportedly been weighing a decision to nominate a candidate for the Director-General of the WHO, according to academics and experts familiar with these discussions. Our queries to Chinese authorities were not answered by the time this story went to print.

A source familiar with these considerations told us that while no decision had been made yet, the government was weighing fielding a candidate. The nominations process closes tomorrow, September 24, 2026.

So far, Geneva Health Files has not received a denial from Chinese authorities in response to several queries sent over the last few weeks.

We are reporting on this, considering the significance of China in global health, as WHO’s largest contributor in membership fees or assessed contributions.

If China does field a candidate, it will immediately change the complexion of these elections.
